Housing Bubble
'The Housing Bubble: Fact or Fiction?'
Yale University economist Robert Shiller, the "Queen of New York Real Estate" Barbara Corcoran, and the director of the Joint Center for Housing Studies at Harvard University Nicolas Retsinas head a list of more than two dozen leading economists, academics and CEOs scheduled to appear as part of "The Housing Bubble: Fact or Fiction?", a two-day conference January 16-17 at the Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles.
Shiller, who authored the best-selling book "Irrational Exuberance," and a Cofounder of the real estate analytics firm Fiserv Case Shiller Weiss; Corcoran, who quit her day job as a waitress 25 years ago to found what is now one of Manhattan's premiere real estate companies; and Retsinas, one of the nation's most respected housing scholars, are indicative of the impressive host of speakers slated to share their findings, predictions and opinions on the real estate economy during the Summit.
Shiller, likened to a modern-day Nostradamus because he predicted the recent stock market crash, will share his prognostications on everything from mortgages to the future of the nation's housing market during the conference's keynote address.
Equally compelling will be Corcoran, who called it quits as a waitress in 1973 and founded the Corcoran Group out of her Upper East Side apartment. Her company has since become the pre-eminent residential real estate sales organization in the nation's largest city.
Retsinas, as director of the nation's most scholarly housing research organization, has been the architect of many of the nation's housing policies. He will share his provocative thoughts challenging traditional theories of supply and demand in the housing market.
In addition to Shiller, Corcoran and Retsinas, those featured during the two-day event will focus much of their attention on prospects for a housing market correction and strategies for adjusting to new market conditions.
"The conference is designed to do what most other conferences do not -- ensure every attendee has the opportunity to personally question those whose opinions and predictions they are paying to hear," said Bradley Inman, founder and publisher of Inman News, the producer of the event. "Our selection of speakers and panelists was painstaking because we wanted to ensure that the content was spectacular."
In addition to Shiller, Corcoran, Retsinas and Inman, speakers, panelists and moderators slated to appear at the industry summit include:
- Bob Moles, chief executive officer, Cendant Real Estate Franchise Group
- Doug Duncan, chief economist, Mortgage Bankers Association of America
- Amy Crews Cutts, principal economist, Freddie Mac
- Leslie Appleton-Young, chief economist, California Association of Realtors
- Patrick Barta, Reporter, The Wall Street Journal
- Patrick Stone, chief executive office, FNIS
- Ron Peltier, CEO, Home Services of America
- Steve Kerch, real estate editor, CBS MarketWatch
- Ken Goldstein, economist, The Conference Board
